“Childbirth is more admirable than conquest, more amazing than self-defense, and as courageous as either one.” – Gloria Steinem

Explore my Montreal birth and postpartum doula services.

Choosing to hire a doula is a big decision, and you likely have a lot of questions around my role and how I will help meet your needs before, during, and after the birth of your baby. Keep reading for answers to some of the questions I hear about doula care, and information about my packages.

Do I really need a doula?

TRUTH: You are strong and amazing and you will birth your baby, with or without a doula. Maybe a partner, friend, or family member will be with you when you’re in labour. Not to mention, of course, the nurses and your doctor or midwife. No, technically you don’t need a doula. But what we add to the mix is impartial, continuous, trained, experienced, nonclinical support. We simply do everything possible to help you have an informed, positive, empowering pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period—on YOUR terms. Some say we “mother the mother.” Here are some other benefits to having a doula on your birth team.

What do you mean by “support”? What DO doulas do at a birth, anyway?

It all depends on your needs and desires, and how labour unfolds for you. Birth doula support might include: hands-on comfort measures such as massage and acupressure, supporting partners in actively and effectively supporting YOU, “taking over” for partners so they can get a bit of rest, fetching food or ice, keeping the room dimly lit and quiet, cranking up some Jay-Z or Radiohead if quiet isn’t working for you, giving you the info you need to help you make informed decisions about your medical care, walking you up and down the stairs or to and from the washroom, talking you through every single one of those last few crazy contractions, taking photos. After your baby arrives, I’ll stay with you for an hour or so, to help get breastfeeding off to a solid start, maybe find more food for you (you’ll be really hungry!), and bow down to you in all your strength and holy-wow-I-just-gave-birth radiance.

Crazy contractions? So, do I need to be planning a natural birth to hire a doula?

Absolutely not. You can be 100% sure that you want, say, an epidural when things start getting rough (or hey, even before then) and still benefit immensely from my care. Remember, I provide nonclinical informational, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after your birth. Doula care is so much more than helping you weather contractions.

During your pregnancy: Instill confidence with two prenatal visits
I’ll meet with you (and your partner, if applicable) at your home. We’ll discuss how your pregnancy is going, how you feel, and what you might expect and need when you go into labour. We’ll work through any questions, concerns, or outright fears you might have. If you feel like writing a birth plan, I can go over it with you. We’ll also devote some time to prepping for the postpartum period, especially if this is your first baby (aka, What do I do with this adorable little thing? or When will my milk come in? or When should I bust out the champagne?). By the time the main event rolls around, we should know each other really well!

On your big day: Nurture and empower with continuous support during labour and birth
So…like anything in life, birth pretty much never happens quite the way you envisioned. But I’ll be there to accompany you during your labour and birth, drawing on my knowledge and intuition to help you have the safest and most joyful experience possible.

After your birth: Follow up and check in with a postpartum visit
A week or so following your birth, I’ll visit you at home to see how you and your sweet family are doing. (No need to change out of your pyjamas!) We’ll talk about the birth, and I’ll help you out with breastfeeding if needed. You can ask me any questions you have, and I can provide you with resources to help make your transition to parenthood as healthy and happy as possible.

Post Partum Care $30/hourmontreal birth doula package

Whether or not I was your birth doula, I’m happy to provide you with postpartum doula services to help you integrate your new baby into your family.

Postpartum care is $30/hour (minimum of three hours per visit). Save money by purchasing a pack of four three-hour visits for $330.

Postpartum services can include:
✓ Baby care. Nervous about giving baby a bath (I certainly was with my firstborn!), or wondering how to put together all those cloth diapers a friend passed on to you? I can show you how to do it. Or maybe you just want to SLEEP or shower or walk around the block and let me take baby for awhile.
✓ Breastfeeding support. Though yes, natural, beautiful, and insanely full of health benefits, breastfeeding can be tricky or even downright frustrating for many new parents. I can help troubleshoot, or if necessary, refer you to a lactation consultant.
✓ Emotional support. The initial weeks after your baby is born can be overwhelming, to say the least. The reality of a major life change plus all those hormones levelling out can make for a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I can listen—maybe even while giving you a nice foot massage—and refer you to additional community resources, if needed.
✓ Light housework or meal prep. Everything’s swell, but the messy kitchen or bathroom is getting on your last nerve? Let me go in there and tackle it for you while you snuggle up with your baby. (But first I’ll make you a lovely cup of coffee or tea.)

“With her knowledge, experience, and relaxed manner, Heather calmed the anxieties I had about my pregnancy and the birth and made the hospital birth a peaceful experience. Between her expert acupressure, which allowed me to forgo medication, and her calm and competent presence by my side, the birth was a positive and empowering experience. Her guidance with what to expect helped us deal with some of the emotional ups and downs following the birth. Warm, open-minded, and a good listener and advocate, Heather truly loves being a part of childbirth.” – Amanda B.
